Marine Turtles, Wadis & Desert
4 days / 3 nights
| Day 01 |
Muscat - Sur - Ras Al Hadd
Pick-up service in the morning at Muscat. On our first segment to Sur, the off-road track passes along a panoramic stretch of the eastern Hajar Mountains, with its steep cliffs and then onto the sandy beaches on the Gulf of Oman. With some luck we are able to see gazelles and wild donkeys, which inhabit this area. Shortly after Quriyat we make a side trip ot the famous "sinkhole" - a geological phenomenon that appears unexpectedly in the limestone plateau.
We continue driving along the coastline; shortly before Tiwi we approach Wadi Shab. The waters of this wadi cut a deep canyon in the surrounding mountains. Between the high walls of the limestone formations appear beautiful, tranquil water pools - surrounded by lush palm gardens - a truly magnificent view. Qalhat is our next stop - the archeological ruins of an ancient city once ruled by Bibi Mariyam. Sur has been a port on the Omani coast for at least 2,000 years; you will pay a visit to the Dhow building site and to the Fishermen's Harbour. Afterwards we continue our way to Ras Al Hadd, the most eastern tip of the Arabian peninsular. From here we reach the natural resort of the Green Sea Turtles, spending the rest of the day here. In the late evening hours we will be able to witness the extraordinary sight of the female Green Turtles approaching the beach in order to lay their eggs. Overnight at Turtle Beach Camp. (l/d)
|
| Day 02 |
Ras Al Hadd / Ras Al Junayz - Al Ashkharah - Al Kamil - Wadi Bani Khalid - Wahiba Sands
Having spent the morning at the beach we drive along the Indian Ocean through one of the most magnificent landscapes of Oman's Eastern Coast. Steep cliffs and long sandy beaches alternate before we turn north at Al Ashkharah into the Wahiba Sands Desert. The road along the dunes of Wahiba Sands and through coloured moutains will lead us ultimately to Wadi Bani Khalid - one of the beautiful wadis in Oman. Immediately next to the dry vastness of the desert we step into another world. The clear blue waters of the pools invite us for a dip after a short walk through the magnificent beauty of this wadi. Here we enjoy a picnic. Then we leave the mountains and drive through the endless sea of dunes to the Nomadic Desert Camp in the Wahiba Sands. (b/l/d)
|
| Day 03 |

| Day 04 |
FILM - JAALUNI
We are reaching today the Al Huqf region - which is truly one of the
most impressive
landscapes and mountain formations in Oman. The stones reveal signs
of pre-historical glaciers. These glaciers polished the stony underground
in times, when the Arabian peninsular had a far northern location
on earth's surface - due to later drifting of the continent plates.
Passing through this astonishing landscape we then reach to the higher
levels of the Jaaluni plateau. This is the centre of the worldwide
famous Oryx National park - where we are going to stay overnight.
Tonight we are invited to have dinner with a local Bedouin family
of the Harasi tribe. (b/l/d) |
| Day 05 |
JAALUNI - RAS MADRAKAH
Having been granted special permission from the government - we are
one of the few people to see and watch the rare Oryx gazelle in their
original and wild habitat. The strict procedures of this sanctuary
have secured the existence of the White Oryx, which was at the brink
of extinction. Later we will head towards the sea - and arrive at
the beautiful bay of Ras Madrakah. Breath taking scenery awaits us:
dark black rocks forming the bright white sandy beaches. We enjoy
the clear waters of the Ocean - erect our campsite on the beach and
settle for the night. (b/l/d) |
| Day 06 |
RAS MADRAKAH - WADI SHUWAIMIYAH
We will spend the day driving along the beautiful coastal plains
of the south - until we reach the pink lagoon of Al Kahil. Early
evening
we arrive at the spectacular white canyons of Wadi Shuwaimiyah. Overnight
at campsite. (b/l/d)
|
| Day 07 |
WADI SHUWAIMIYAH - SALALAH
Like most other gulf states - Oman has vast oil reserves available.
On our today's segment we will pass the interesting oil fields of
Marmul and see how Oman reveals the black gold.
Later in the day we reach Thumrait - and see the green hills of Salalah.
We enjoy a sumptuous last farewell dinner and stay overnight at a
Beachhotel in Salalah. (b/l/d). |
| Day 08 |
EXTENSION SALALAH or SALALAH -
MUSCAT
